Despite the assault on abbreviation texting is enhancing literacy levels
Mobile phones may well be the scourge of most classrooms, with pupils engaged in essential “wat u up 2 l8r?” communication, but in fact it’s now believed texting may actually be helping students to write more quickly and fluently.
A Stanford University study found that today’s mobile phone texting teen is actually writing more across texting, blogging and social media updates than previous generations. And it’s believed quantity will manifest itself into quality when it matters most.
So, while text abbreviation may leave English Lit departments seething, teens are actually mastering grammar and phonology without even knowing it. Altogether now: “Phones on class!”
